Prof. Dr. Evren Yaşar: We now have stroke cases due to coronavirus

Ankara City Hospital Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Evren Yaşar said, "We now have stroke cases due to coronavirus. We now have disabilities due to nervous system involvement. We also take an active role in the treatments. There are many patients that we take from intensive care this way. "

Prof. Dr. Universe Yasar, said that around 7-8 per cent of the disability rate in Turkey. Noting that it is very important for these citizens to access hospitals and treatment during the pandemic period, Prof. Dr. Yaşar said, "You know, Europe is a bit confused on this issue. The options of disabled citizens have been narrowed. But on the contrary, we continued the treatment of all health problems of our disabilities in Ankara City Hospital, both from the bed and outpatient. There is another issue, which is the disability caused by the coronavirus. We now have cases of stroke due to coronavirus. Now we have disabilities due to nervous system involvement. We are actively involved in the treatment of this. There are many patients we receive from intensive care in this way. In other words, coronavirus is a factor that can affect the nervous system and cardiac system by itself and cause disability. And about this, we had to develop treatment strategies, which we achieved here, we actively use these methods here, "he said.

Prof. Dr. Yaşar stated that the coronavirus is a very different disease, and the immobilization and rest of those who suffer from this disease are very important. Prof. Dr. Yaşar said, "The subject we support as physical therapy and rehabilitation is the control of patients in intensive care processes. I do not say 'rehabilitation program'. A support program for patients' control and their return to daily life after leaving intubation and a movement program for these patients to complete their movements while going home. The event we call 'pulmonary rehabilitation' does not start 6-8 weeks before. We recommend that they increase their movements within 3 weeks. We do not expect them to quickly return to their normal lives. They should not be in such an expectation. This will return slowly. Also walking on flat ground is very important here, "he said.

Prof. Dr. Yaşar, regarding the rehabilitation processes of individuals who have had coronavirus, "It is not correct to give a rate about what percentage of the patients who have had the disease need rehabilitation according to the citizens who have had the disease. But our recommendations are definitely important in the return to life of patients who have had severe pneumonia. Many musculoskeletal problems due to drugs, respiratory problems due to the disease itself and its effects need a time to be seen in the body. Therefore, we recommend resting as much as possible in the active period of the disease, gradually increasing performance and walking after suffering the disease.
